I was especially fond of the brief, but satisfying sequence where Manigan asks a disaffected civilian if she can use his home phone, and he frankly tells her that even if he could (Chen's guys are using a cell phone blocker), he wouldn't since Manigan cannot, in good faith, promise him that she'll protect his family. As a film, in the more international setting, many might find fault with the sparse dialogue, and the fact that a lot of background information isn’t really given to the audience. As mentioned earlier, the film is very topical, and its setting and the way the groups of people were presented were cranked up by several notches in order to drive the point home that this “War on Drugs” is truly a manipulated war, and the ones who are caught in the crossfire are the innocent civilians and the police officers who are just truly doing their jobs. But that didn't lessen the rote, numbing effect that the film's violence had on me. Make no mistake, BuyBust is a condemnation of how the culture of death and violence that is being propagated by the government in the name of the dubious greater good has numbed the country to the point of apathy. Many might also complain that there was just one round of violence too much, but piling action scene upon action scene actually mirrors what is happening in reality, that there are no breaks, and this happens all the time, almost every day. It is wild and thrilling.
The film doesn't waste any time, with Anton Santamaria's screenplay providing just the necessary information to supply the action with not just faces to follow but essential motivations and character quirks.
BuyBust, however, is a film that shines because of its details. It also sets the film's curiously manic humor, one that adds a rather guilty levity to all the wanton and violence the film so bluntly displays.
Aside from this, the camera work and choreography at points was just wonderful and in perfect sync, especially when the camera, towards the latter part, shifts to Manigan and follows her going through the maze of a slum while fighting off wave after wave of different kinds of people, from the streets all the way to the rooftops. The opener sets the film's mood, which is amorally ominous given the desperation to nip the problem of drugs at its very source. Action is a film genre that comes in many forms, and every country has their own version of the action film, from fast car chase scenes to epic fight sequences.
