The essay “Dream Children” is a narrative essay in which the author, Charles Lamb narrates the story of his dream that he had. The Adventures of Ulysses, 1808. The essay reaches its climax when the readers become aware of the reality that the children listening to Lamb’s stories are nothing but a figment of his imagination and a dream of a sleeping man. The fable he constructs speaks to how odd it is that humans eat cooked animals at all.
He also feels depressed on the loss of his unrequited love Alice and regrets not marrying her. Once again, Lamb construes literary devices and narrative forms in such a way that he manages to sneak some fiction into his essay work. Meanwhile he began contributing literary articles to an assortment of newspapers and periodicals. While we have little reason to believe many of the facts are fabricated in these essays (aside from the facts Lamb tells us are fabricated), Lamb choosing a pseudonym for himself meant that he could assign pseudonyms to others in his life, and shift their relationship to himself ever so slightly to better fit an essay's purpose.
He found these burnt pigs delicious and could not stop eating them. Seemingly, the Elia character gave Lamb permission to fictionalize his life just enough for him to feel comfortable writing about it. Look no further than "The Praise of Chimney-Sweepers" to find the type of person Lamb considers noble. But as an individual writer, Lamb is arguably best known for his contributions to the essay form.
In his Essays of Elia and its sequel, Last Essays of Elia, Charles Lamb explores a broad range of topics and works with various non-fiction tropes that often edge into the terrain of fiction. In the essay, Dream–Children; A Reverie. The essay starts with—typical for Elia—a flight of fancy, as he gets lost in a scene of a tea ceremony depicted on a cup. "Rejoicings Upon a New Year's Coming of Age". Lamb is very interested in the distinction between social class and the type of class one exhibits (i.e. As a Romantic, Lamb brought a key innovation to the somewhat new form, inserting his own personally to give the essays a conversational tone. A Reverie expresses his unfulfilled and the most cherished desires.
The essay concludes with an anecdote about how ancient people used to sacrifice pigs by whipping them, raising a moral conundrum about enjoying the meat of that animal. Elia writes an obituary for his friend Elliston, a beloved stage actor whose on-stage and off-stage presences were indistinguishable from one another. His father was a law clerk who worked in the Inner Temple, one of the courts of London, and wrote poetry in his spare time. Sometimes Elia's narration is rambling and digressive, other times it is cogent and incisive. Bo-bo eventually convinced his father to try the pig, and the father loved it too, but they agreed to keep the burnt pigs a secret. My First Acquaintance With Poets, By William Hazlitt. Sometimes this is painful stuff, such as his rejection by his unrequited love Alice.
