This car that is approaching indeed may be a light color patrol car of some type, its lights barely discerned to be flashing, or this may very well be an optical illusion. His writing style doesn't appeal to me, and never has, which is why I don't read King, but I did read The Shining many years ago, after having seen Kubrick's film, and was impressed then with the depth of King's acquaintance with the psychology of abuse, alcoholism and addiction, not just as it relates to Jack in his battle with alcoholism, but his family, friends and acquaintances as well, and King's ability to express that knowledge without losing the panorama of the individual and their unique experience.
