They gave him his father's death in the original book, which I guess is poetic but is also stupid. I haven't seen all of his work (just Hush, Gerald's Game and this) but based on what I have seen, I'm going to check out everything he does from now on. It’s odder and more contemplative, but worth checking in. Why does Dan need to go there to defeat Rose?
There are so many great ties to Danny and abra left out and his death at the end is unnecessary nor is it in the book....his changes didn’t make the story better. Dan and Billy wiped out the entire group in the woods with guns.
The disconnect exists elsewhere too, namely the climax of the film. Ewan McGregor was fantastic, and it was a wonderful casting choice that I never would have expected.
On the other-hand, wasn’t a huge fan of the 3 hour runtime it dragged heavily until the last hour or so.

I saw the film on Monday and liked it a lot. The scores will change as time passes. I love they made Danny a bit more powerful in this one. Lol. This is the perfect halloween movie to watch this weekend. It's a beautiful moment that made me cry when I read it, and the movie just made him an unrepentant villain who didn't even appear in the finale. I feel like all these critics just aren't into stories about redemption, because I can't see someone who has that affinity not thinking this. The theory about Jack Torrance molesting Danny seems pretty on point after seeing this. Both actors did a great job, sometimes I had to really look at them to see if they were using old footage in the flashbacks. I'm also impressed by Henry Thomas and his performance as Jack. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. I know it'll probably enhance my experience but is it needed? I read the book when it first came out and my memory is hazy. It played out almost exactly as I pictured when I read the book. Doctor Sleep on the other hand has redemption arc, sometimes the villains win, sometimes the good guys win and it has a bittersweet ending. In the same vein as making Danny more powerful, I really liked the scene where he sees Dick again, but not knowing it's Dick, you get a glimpse of the boxes Danny has used to trap the other spirits from the Overlook. I felt that one. These reviewers felt that, despite its reverence for The Shining, Doctor Sleep is strong enough to stand on its own feet: Vulture: Doctor Sleep is full of indelible imagery — bodies made bloody, an endless hedge maze dappled with snow, a woman gliding across the night sky shot through with stars.
The beginning with Danny and Wendy living after escaping the Overlook was terrifying. Just finished watching the directors cut, It was visually stunning. Trace Sauveur has been a regular critic at Ready Steady Cut since March 2019. I can't imagine how uncomfortable that must have been for everyone to film. Henry Thomas as The Bartender/ Jack Torrance, Sadie and KK Heim as the Grady Twins (body), Kaitlyn McCormick and Molly Jackson as the Grady Twins (voices). I was also disappointed that Dan died at the end of the movie. But given Flanagan’s apparent skepticism of purely coasting off Shining worship elsewhere in the film, it’s weird where we end up. All I heard about DS was that it had physic Vampires. My only complaint is the other cult members(except Crow Daddy) wooden acting really distracts me including the girl who played Abra. The film haphazardly jumps from being an accessible, sort of hacky supernatural drama that even has genuine comedic beats to something much darker and grim at the drop of a hat. Just know its nothing like the Shining. Then right after that, new scenes of Wendy and Danny Torrence after leaving the Overlook Hotel, a move that signifies this film doesn’t find it necessary to shy away from reintroducing these classic characters played by new actors. I mean these people have been not only killing but TORTURING kids, for CENTURIES. I mean... that's Stephen King for you. The ending of Doctor Sleep is supposed to give Jack Torrance his redemption. Obviously not on the level of it's predecessor but it tries to be its own thing, it relies much more on supernatural magic aspect, and is more of a thriller than scary. It's nothing to go channeling your inner Jack Nicholson and chopping through doors. Alex & Henry killed it as Wendy/Jack so much so I would happily watch a remake of the original if they returned and Mike directed. Controversial take: I enjoyed Doctor Sleep more than I enjoyed The Shining. In the book, Danny only has 1 gun and they end up using the gun out of necessity. It definitely gave me X-Men vibes during certain “fight scenes”. Speaking of Jacob Tremblay, holy shit what a performance. I loved Dr. Sleep as a stand alone.
So yeah, I totally enjoy seeing Doctor Sleep more. I'm so glad they didn't try and use CGI to create 1980 Jack Nicholson for the film. The faithfulness to the novel was a huge treat, even though it felt more like a streaming film. When Snakebite Andy tells Billy to kill himself and he does before Danny could do anything, I actually waited for this to happen in the book. It doesn't just work great as a sequel to The Shining, but it does a good job of standing up on its own and telling its own story. Danny holding the ax and Rose climbing the stairs after Danny just how Jack and Wendy did it was so well done. Props to Mike Flanagan for making as entertaining film as he did. Then you see one open and then Dick shows himself so Danny stops from locking him away. When they beat the villain by siccing the Overlook ghosts on her, it looked like they went to a horror convention and hired all the Shining cosplayers they could find. It’s a giant, terrifying monolith sitting high on a hill. In the movie, Danny and Billy go full our Rambo on these motherfuckers! The music, the direction and the story was great. I loved the throwback scenes of Danny & Wendy and I think that should of been explored more. Maybe that's because I don't know much about the source material so I'm not as harsh of a critic, but I found it entertaining throughout. That felt like fanservice more than anything. At least the twins got their time to shine, considering they were the best part of the movie.All of that was fine until the ending. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Holy shit...I did not expect to love this movie as much as I did. The Right Stuff season 1, episode 2 recap – “Goodies”.
Ewan was very bland and absolutely hated his generic American accent. But Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep" respects both King's and Kubrick's visions while letting a rising horror master go his own way, too. It’s a film I’m left with endlessly conflicting emotions on, but one I ultimately respect for its admirable craft and its boundless sense of moxie for taking on this endeavor. I liked Rose the Hat but I could have done without some of the True Knot scenes.
Sort of. Curran was also perfect in the role of Abra. Finally, Abra talking to Danny's ghost, all is forgiven for killing Danny. It wouldn't make sense for Jack to just turn "good" for no real reason following the ending to the first film. I didn't read the second book, but I think they wanted to stick to Kubrick's ending and presumed that Jack was gone forever once the overlook got in his head. I think trying to compare this to Kubrick's film is a fool's errand because it's mostly interested in being its own movie and only does The Shining related stuff when it needs to, which only makes up about 10 minutes of a 2.5 hour movie.
My favorite parts, in no particular order: The beginning part is spot on with the book. I didn't mind the silly vampire stuff but none of the Kubrick fanservice worked for me at all. If it weren't for these, the movie couldve been better experience. I do think the movie could’ve been elevated hugely if it had a similar score to A Quiet Place & the original film.
