gentefied' review

In this inviting new Netflix dramedy, a Mexican-American family battles the forces of gentrification. What’s unique about Gentefied is the way it pulls back to situate that intergenerational conflict within a larger community, where a Chicana garment …

I laughed, i cried, I cried laughing, I felt hurt and anger and gained inspiration; everything a TV series needs to get going.

Vida tells a more intimate, mature story, one that’s just as attuned to the complexities of gentrification yet also delves into themes such as womanhood, power and desire. The Dominican character makes no sense to me.

l... people that are watching Gentefied age rating up to 13 and up is nothing that bad inappropriate. I Loved this TV show and kept me Laughing. A few scenes, such as the one where a woman stares longingly into a bakery window full of pastries she can’t afford, verge on cliché. “Gentefied” Season 1 premiered Friday, February 21 on Netflix. To a certain extent, this approach also distinguishes Gentefied from Vida, the exceptional Starz drama in which two adult sisters from the same neighborhood reunite at their childhood home after the death of their mother, who owned both the building they grew up in and the insolvent bar on its ground floor. By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policy I get that this show is portraying the frustration over the very real fact of gentrification.

What does it mean to change when your community's being displaced...and is it even worth it?

This is a warm and literate exploration of how an extended family and their friends.

Ana (Karrie Martin, Pretty Little Liars) is—to her mother’s chagrin—an artist, juggling her work with odd jobs and a serious girlfriend, Yessika (Julissa Calderon). Check out IndieWire’s interview with the creative team below.

Orbiting this dick-swinging contest is Ana (Karrie Martin), a queer artist who must play family peacekeeper, while good-naturedly ribbing her cousins about their “toxic masculinity.”. Our ratings are based on child development best practices. Gentrification, as depicted in pop culture, tends to be a conflict between strangers. External Reviews I was so deeply hungry for this show, I had no idea how much so.

Please do not bring back Yesenia or give her less screen time; she is just not that good an actress unless they are trying to create a character you can easily hate like Bryce from 13 reasons why.

Like a lot of modern half-hours, it’s more a comedy in theory than practice, though the third episode — where Chris offers to take a “Mexican test” to get the other kitchen workers to stop teasing him — is quite funny.

Superb acting, story, and directing. ‘Gentefied’ Review: A Fresh L.A. Story In this inviting new Netflix dramedy, a Mexican-American family battles the forces of gentrification Now, we have one more gift to the thank the web series for: “Gentefied.” Funny, incisive, and oozing with homegrown charm, “Gentefied” is exactly the kind of TV we need right now. Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization, earns a small affiliate fee from Amazon or iTunes when you use our links to make a purchase. A great show. I actually am taking a break as I write this. User Ratings Yesenia from Pero Like is an odd addition to the cast as she just doesn't seem to fit within the narrative aside from her being one more rep for "Latinx" people with a skew and bias understanding about the plot regarding with the taco shop and the main cast livelihood. Gentefied is an in-depth, entertaining, engaging almost-dramedy series worthy of network-level attention and acclaim. Also not all of us spew this much hate towards white people or anyone who is gentrifying neighborhoods. Whenever a Mexican tried to raise themselves up economically, they are portrayed as traitors to their community.

Netflix’s latest half-hour comedy is bilingual, bold, and braced to tackle painful issues with wit and nuance. Neighborhoods across the nation can relate to the stories told in the show so I hope for a season 2 and for more shows like this on Netflix. And because it arrives at a time when TV is already home to Vida, One Day at a Time (which Pop TV rescued after Netflix canceled it), Los Espookys, On My Block, Alternatino with Arturo Castro, and more, it doesn’t have to function as a grand unified Latinx field theory. You'll notice some people are giving bad reviews (not surprised at all) because the shows way of telling this stories while also making several points; many people are going through that and much worse and just because those scenarios don't paint SOME well "it's biased", these are the same people that love to remind you everyday 'not everyone of us' but when some else does anything 'it's all of them'. Series deals with some very serious social issues in a beautiful way .. How do the characters in Gentefied demonstrate perseverance?

Really.

In this Streaming Renaissance, however, Netflix …

Yes, you want more money to poor communities, but these means bringing in different demographics which brings change that offends some people. Topics such as toxic masculinity and female empowerment are frequently brought up. Love the sets, art, and especially the music too....it is just so beautiful to watch.

First there was “Broad City,” then there was “High Maintenance” and “Insecure.” Thanks to the age of web series, peak TV has been able to anoint some of its most inventive creators, especially underrepresented or unknown ones who otherwise may have had trouble getting into a a pitch room, much less getting the green light. Highly recommended and I hope this show gains a major audience. Fox; but the series seemed crippled by self-consciousness over its status as a rare network drama with a predominantly black cast. Funny, real, great writing and acting.

Also in their orbit is cousin Ana, a young painter who is trying to figure out how to make it in the overwhelmingly bourgeois art world without betraying her roots -- an issue that's especially important to her outspoken activist girlfriend, Yessika. Watch.. What is the show trying to say about the idea of someone being a "real" Mexican?

Pop is just a great character that reminds me to my parents and how they can adjust to times even if everything about the culture and how they were raised is telling them to not change.

The forced push of LGBTQ+ issues on top of having to deal with gentrification is a little much; I am sure the LGBTQ+ issues would have been better handled if they had been more on the backburner but still relative to the plot by showing Ana's story.

Fierce memoir about Asian family makes fresh, sweet sitcom.

This has been a theme of nearly every recent series about the children of immigrants, from Master of None to Fresh Off the Boat to One Day at a Time. Meanwhile, Ana’s ethnic identity, sexuality, politics and ambition come into conflict when a gay white man hires her to paint a homoerotic mural on a building he purchased in the neighborhood—and the older woman who operates a store inside it starts losing business. But you can't have everything the same and make it different, really.

People are losing their homes and entire way of life and throwing money at it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

I cannot figure out why this series is rated "MA" on Netflix. In the bigger and more inclusive world of Peak TV, there’s more room to just tell a specific story. With developers encroaching every inch of real estate (even the ones from the neighborhood), Mama Fina’s is struggling to keep up with rising rents. But I also think that the portrayal of white people in the show as blatantly all dumb and or all racist is a bit of a stretch. I seriously love this more and more. This show doesn't do anything to encourage minorities to strive for their own success only a victim mentality.

Can't wait for Season 2!!! Fantastic writing, characters, and cast! And while the focus is mostly on Pop and his grandkids, there’s also room for anthological detours, like an episode focusing on Javier (Jaime Alvarez), a local mariachi musician struggling to make a living when everyone would rather stream songs on their phones. I love the attempt at creating an entangled ensemble of relatable and endearing characters with intersecting storylines and different points of view. These are real issues in East L.A. , where my family grew up. I can't WAIT for the next season. Metacritic Reviews, About time someone created a TV show like this, funny, humor, family with Hispanic culture, old school with New school.

There have been proposals in Portland to pay reparations.

Great idea.

Hall of Fame creator Steven Bochco tried to diversify the world of network TV with City of Angels, a hospital show starring Blair Underwood and Vivica A.

Didn't hear anything about this show just happened to stumble across it earlier today.

Watch it, love it y gózalo! I loved it at first but was disappointed at the end. Meanwhile, Erik slaves away helping Pops with the family business, Mama Fina’s taco shop, Boyle Heights’ finest and a gathering place for all the locals. Why do some of the characters seem to have an issue with Chris, and the way he grew up? The family drama and central characters are compelling enough, but “Gentefied” really struts its stuff in two bottle episodes.

I watched the whole series in a 24 hour period.

Don't ride this show off as "hating white people" because it doesn't.
