It looks like it had some amount of money thrown at it, but I assure you, every penny was wasted. Why is this movie about really simple robot aliens w/o any mention of actual aliens? Ended up watching this one twice. A must-see for sci-fi fans and ten-year-old boys. Every human being in the world has been implanted with a device on the side of their head to track their whereabouts. How can someone spend so much time, money and effort (Significant amounts by the look of things), get names such as Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley to join his project and end up with this sad excuse for a sci-fi blockbuster wannabe? Robot Overlords does sum up with that standard, it's formulaic about its own plot: an evil force, unlikely heroes, a protagonist who has something special inside him which becomes the only hope to save the day. Why, for example, does the otherwise genteel seaside town, seemingly set in the north judging by Sir Ben Kingsley’s accent, have its own Lock Stock-style contingent of shotgun-wielding Cockneys? Syfy cable do a better job at SciFi Watch a repeat of The Terminator. Bad effects.
The main plot treads along nicely from one scene to the next, and even the locations are kept fairly easy to identify – The Hotel, The Castle, The Standing Stones. That said, there are also a surprising number of famous faces in support, including a hamming-it-up Ben Kingsley, an out-of-place and uncomfortable Gillian Anderson, as well as Roy Hudd, Tamer Hassan, Geraldine James, and Callan McAuliffe, who these days appears in THE WALKING DEAD.

Ben Kingsley did a nice job of soft playing his role as it was a character that could have went over the top creepy cliché' in a heartbeat. Where some Searching for his father after the rise of the robots, it seems like he’s getting nowhere. Instead, Robot Overlords seems rather too intent on crafting a somewhat dour vision of a robotically dystopian future - which, truth be told, it doesn't quite pull off. Robot Overlords‘ finest visual creation is the Mediator, its genuinely eerie humanoid villain, a kind of ambulant shop window dummy with a staccato voice and the face of a small boy. This is my opinion of what I've just seen. We’re very much seeing this from the point of view of the children within the movie… and it keeps the larger, heavier plots – such as oppression and subjugation – within the grasp of the younger audience. Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy. After watching the film i can only say that IF the film had been made in Hollywood it would have a cast of A list stars and more special effects and CGI than Any Star wars film which may have made pots of money for some one but it may not have been so enjoyable. Robot Overlords is like John Milius’s Red Dawn remade for kids, with giant alien robots instead of invading communists, and a small seaside town providing the battleground instead of the sprawling vistas of Colorado. It's shot in a low budget, on the street way, but it has a number of CGI effects of giant robot oppressors that turn out to be surprisingly good given the limitations. It's it's clearly done on a budget, it does not look like a 200-million-dollar picture, but I am so tired of shallow "all style and no substance" hyped up blockbusters that I even enjoy this indie feel of the film.
