Bennett's novel plays with its characters' nagging feelings of being incomplete—for the twins without each other; for Jude’s boyfriend, Reese, who is trans and seeks surgery; for their friend Barry, who performs in drag as Bianca. I am not old enough to be a babysitter because that is a girl who has long hair and her jeans go loose around her shoe and nail polish that is pink like a pink popsicle except dark. Written in spare, beautiful prose that evokes the richness of the mountains, ocean, river, and forest through which the girl travels, The Bear is a fable that centers the earth and its inherent generosity toward those who treat it with respect. LITERARY FICTION, by Ostensibly written from the perspective of a five year old tending to her younger brother in the aftermath of both parents being killed by a bear, it too often felt like a gimmick.
Anna and her brother Alex (known as Stick because of his ever present sticky hands) are used to canoeing, camping and hiking with their parents, so when Anna hears strange noises and her parents frightened yelling, she knows something is wrong. Execution doesn't quite live up to conceptualization in this novel. It is a harrowing tale, and the writing made me catch my breath at times. Krivak (The Signal Flame, 2017, etc.) And then...it was daylight. I’ve also read this style before in a book that I really strongly disliked (and that’s being kind)- so I ultimately didn’t notice it much. Anna is pre-occupied with trying to behave as her mother and father have schooled her; despite the horror of the situation, she worries about doing what her mother tells her to do, being polite, remembering that Stick is too young to understand. Also, the story stalls for close to the first third – Poop. T his book is about a bear from darkest Peru called Paddington. She has trouble with her 'adult-speak' vs. 'kids-speak'. It is important to say that although the point-of-view of The Bear is a five-year old girl, Anna, the voice is not like Emma Donoghue’s Jack in Room. The last half of the novel is hastily and rather sloppily concluded which is a shame given how interesting a more thoughtful retrospective could have been.
