My dad suggested I read this. Wonderful descriptions of the Convent and surrounds made it really come to life. I was also getting confused about the characters and the time periods because of all the jumping around between the generations and it didn’t seem to flow well to me. I’m sticking my neck out to declare that this is Maureen McCarthy’s best novel. Thank you for taking the time to write this it has given me a lot of insight into my mother’s past. Something went wrong. Pleased things turned out well for her in this end. And conversations between the young people of the modern era didn’t have a natural rhythm or feel. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. The true strength of Hargreaves as well as many other children like her shines through the words of this book. Ellen, who at age four became a ward of the state living at the convent, after her father had her mother declared an unfit parent; Cecilia, Ellen’s only daughter, who at age nineteen took her vows and joined the secluded order as Sister Anunciata; and 19-year-old Pe. Inspired by McCarthy’s family history, The Convent is a young adult novel which will appeal to readers young and old. I guess we all have preferred eras to read in, and the 1960s/70s aren't my favourites.
This book was a great read by an equally fantastic writer. Almost 60 years after the abuse began, Marie Hargreaves has finally found the courage and strength to speak out about her ordeal. Be grateful for what you have in life because there is always someone that is just happy to be cared for. The writing was painfully bad, but I appreciate the telling of the story. In the end, the author depicts her life with honesty and her final revelations were both truthful and direct. Another problem arises when Peaches, whose real name is Perpetua, discovers that her real grandmother is still alive, and wishes to make contact with her. Funny enough my youngest brother moved back to Melbourne and he lives walking distance from the convent he moved there without even knowing this is the one mum was always referring to until she went for a visit and told him. Quite enjoyable, well written, a few too many incidental details that needed more development to make them worth inclusion in the storyline.

I feel the modern pregnancy just feels too forced to give the three parallel stories. It was so sad reading how awful family life was and how much abuse the author suffered. This book takes us through Marie’s life of poverty and being sent away to live in a convent for three years of her childhood, the scars of this time never leaving her. This is my true story of survival.
The story jumps around quite a bit between the different characters and years – and not always in order, so I recommend if you are going to read it have some time up your sleeve. A sad read but shows that women are just as capable as men to commit abuse. Ellen then grows to become the mother of Ceci.
A tragic story of how a young girl’s life was ruin by being sent to a convent for reasons she did not know and what it entails throughout her childhood and how it affected her into her adulthood.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. There are quite a few books to be found about both girls and boys being sent into homes or orphanages run by nuns. I’ve never read anything by Maureen McCarthy before, but I do believe I will be hunting down every single book she has ever written now. If you haven't heard of record-smashing singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, is there any hope for you? Maureen’s writing allows the reader to be there with the characters and share in their journey. A little disappointed by the ending, but only a little. Kinda boring, but not a horrible read.
I found it hard to get into and although I enjoyed it well enough while I was reading, I never felt that kind of itch to get back to the story once I'd put it down, because not much ever happened.
