Fastvold, on the other hand, certainly knows how to get the most of out the house’s isolated location (Zack Galler’s cinematography has plenty of style to spare), but ultimately creates a film that fails to engage. Two of the company’s founding members, Sean Durkin and Antonio Campos, have respectively made Martha Marcy May Marlene and Simon Killer, two truly distinctive Indies to come out of America this decade.
Implications of physical and sexual abuse inevitably come up, and hints of a sexual attraction between Ira and Kaia tries to generate some underlying tension to the proceedings. Then he meets Darby McCray, the landscaper who’s recently relocated and taken the town by storm, starting with the transformation of his family’s rental bungalows. The Sleepwalker fails at this for two reasons; its central mystery isn’t that compelling, and the four central characters are too broadly drawn to want to invest anything into them. And Corbet provides one of the only truly intriguing parts of the film with his role. McQuiston’s strength is in dialogue; her characters speak in hilarious rapid-fire bursts with plenty of “likes,” “ums,” creative punctuation, and pop-culture references, sounding like smarter, funnier versions of real people.
Unfortunately The Sleepwalker is nothing more than a tone-deaf attempt at the kind of psychological drama its predecessors did so well. “From the outside, the house in Lakeview Terrace looked perfect.” Which of course means that it wasn't.
Italicized segments preceding each chapter are narrated by a sleepwalking insider, presumably Annalee, who claims to suffer from “sexsomnia”: a rare condition wherein sleepwalkers turn sexually voracious. A sleepwalker himself, Gavin had maintained an avowedly platonic friendship with Annalee after they met in a sleep clinic.
