The playing of the three musicians is extraordinary and the production is crystal clear. This edition of Winterland is markedly different from a single disc compilation, long out of print, that was briefly issued by Rykodisc in the late '80s. Note to self: when music is released 50+ years after it was recorded, there's a reason. This is not Cream." Well what can I say it's jimi live, and although Jimi sounds much better in the studio, some of his live stuff when he didn't go over the top was good and this album has to be (some) of his best live recordings, considering the recording technology of the 1960's is nowhere near as good as todays tech it's good for it's time and in that way it makes it special, I think if Jimi would have had access to todays tech he would have truly blown our minds for sure, but this is as good as it gets. But here is Jimi's three-night stand at Winterland in San Francisco from October of 1968, which, despite excellent recordings by Wally Heider, sat largely unreleased until 2011.
Well, it might be the musicians but it sure isn't the sound. The sound quality is rough - if you have heard the live album on 'Wheels of Fire' (or either of the two other 'official' live albums) you will understand just how awful the sound is. These have all been edited out.

So avoid this but let's see what the other 'unreleased' items outside the 50 year copyright period sound like. Sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. BUT the worst thing is some MORON has put fadeouts and fadeins between EVERY song !
Like a number of the other reviewers of this box set, I was thrilled when I first heard that Hendrix' Winterland concerts were to receive an official release, but I was puzzled and disappointed when the tracklisting was confirmed, as we were only to be offered edited highlights of the 6 shows, from the three nights, as all of the shows bar the last 3 songs from the 3rd performance, are available as good quality soundboard recordings, which are freely available elsewhere. Jimi Hendrix - 1968 [1987] "Live At Winterland" Live at Winterland is a live album by English-American rock band The Jimi Hendrix Experience. This abysmal record sounds like it was recorded over a rotary-dial phone a thousand miles away, with someone at the show holding a handset vaguely in the direction of the stage. There is no excuse for this as most of the 1968 'Goodbye' tour dates were well recorded and the 'Winterland' bootleg is much clearer than this (although in mono).
